How should I prepare my quilt top?
- Iron your quilt top and backing fabric, and allow to cool before folding back up.
- Make sure there are no loose threads or seams on the front and back of your quilt.
- Make sure your quilt and backing are as square as possible to ensure the best outcome for your quilting.
- Please mark the head of your quilt top and backing if directional.
- Notes on Batik Quilts: due to the process of wax being used in Batik fabrics, we recommend that quilts containing Batik fabric should be washed prior to quilting to ensure the best possible result. Due to the large needle size used to quilt Batik quilts, there may be large needle holes in your Batik quilt. These usually close up after the first wash or by ironing with steam.
- Notes on Quilts with Applique: we absolutely cannot quilt any quilts that have used Steam-A-Seam products in the Applique. We reserve the right to turn away quilts if the product used for Applique is not known.
How much larger should my backing and batting be from my quilt top?
Backing - this must be at least 10” wider and 10” longer than the quilt top (or 5” on every side). Ensuring this means the machine clamps can hold your backing in place.
Batting - should be 3” larger than the quilt top on every side.
How do I work out how many square feet my quilt is?
To calculate the size of your quilt in square feet, measure the length and width of your quilt top in inches. Multiply the length by the width. Divide this figure by 144, which will give you the square footage of your quilt.
Example - if your quilt is 70” (width) by 80” (length).
Square Footage = (70 x 80) / 144 = 38.89 sq ft
Multiply the square footage of your quilt by our prices (see Pricing) to get an estimate of the cost of your quilt.
Do I need to supply my own backing and batting?
We currently stock a variety of backings and battings to meet your needs. However, you’re more than welcome to supply your own.
Backing and batting supplied by us will be charged as an additional cost to your quilt.
What thread will be used on my quilt?
